Three clubs, seven courts, and only one of them you can book without knowing somebody — Oceanside to Rancho Santa Fe.
North County San Diego covers a lot of ground: the coastal run from Del Mar up through Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside, plus the inland ranch country around Rancho Santa Fe. It is one of the densest concentrations of racquet-sport spending in California — and padel still landed here later than it did in the city.
It has landed now. Three North County clubs have courts on the ground, and they could hardly be more different from one another: a two-court walk-up club on Oceanside's main street, a Relais & Châteaux resort with courts built alongside Wilson, and an invitation-only coastal club. Whether you can play this weekend depends almost entirely on which of the three you are standing in front of.
Padel Comes to North County
Oceanside got there first. The Coast News reported in January 2024 that two courts had opened at 222 S. Coast Highway, on a 9,500-square-foot lot that had spent its previous life as a used-car dealership — the first padel courts anywhere in North County. Six weeks in, the club counted roughly 60 members.
Almost everything since has been private. La Valle Coastal Club built two courts into its racquet center near Del Mar, and Rancho Valencia added three in Rancho Santa Fe. Both are membership properties. So of the seven North County padel courts standing today, two are open to anyone who books them — which is the reverse of how the sport has grown 30 minutes south, where the big commercial clubs did the heavy lifting.
The Clubs
Padel California
Two blocks from the Oceanside pier, on the strip of Coast Highway that has been quietly turning into the best part of downtown, Padel California is the only place in North County where you can decide to play padel and simply go play padel. The courts are outdoor and enclosed by 10-foot plexiglass walls with about six feet of netting above them — enough to keep a lobbed ball out of the street, and enough that you hear the Pacific between points rather than the traffic.
The crowd is a genuine cross-section: transplants who learned the game in Spain or Argentina, tennis players from Carlsbad who came to try it once, and a fair number of Camp Pendleton regulars. It is a small operation — two courts and a pro shop — which means peak evening slots go early, and the club leans on memberships to keep the community stable rather than treating drop-ins as the main business. Rancho Valencia
Rancho Valencia is the only Relais & Châteaux property in Southern California, and its racquet program was serious long before padel showed up — this is a resort that has hosted professional tennis on its own courts. The three padel courts were added in partnership with Wilson, tucked into the same eucalyptus-shaded canyon as the tennis and pickleball facilities.
What you get here is coaching depth rather than court volume. The club runs weekly group clinics alongside private and semi-private lessons with certified pros, plus Americano-format social play that suits the resort's mixed population of members and guests. Reporting on the program has quoted private lessons in the region of $125 for 60 minutes and $185 for 90 — worth confirming directly, since resort rates move. If you are staying at the property, ask the racquet desk before you assume padel is included; complimentary court use at the resort is generally framed around tennis and pickleball.

La Valle Coastal Club
La Valle sits on El Camino Real between Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe, and its two padel courts are one small part of a racquet center that also carries eight tennis courts and twelve pickleball courts — a scale that lets the club run padel as programming rather than as an amenity. The weekly calendar includes a beginner-facing Padel 101 clinic several times a week, a Challenger clinic for intermediates, live-ball sessions and scheduled open play.
That structure is the real draw. A member who has never held a padel racket can be in a Tuesday morning 101 and in Saturday open play within a month, which is a faster on-ramp than most clubs of this type offer. The catch is the door: membership is by invitation and subject to approval, and there is no guest-of-the-public path onto the courts. If you live in Carmel Valley or Del Mar and racquet sports are already how you spend your weekends, it is worth a conversation with the membership office. Otherwise, Oceanside is your answer.

Resort Padel Around Del Mar
One more court belongs in this conversation even though our directory files it under the city: Taktika Padel at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The address is Carmel Valley, technically inside San Diego city limits, but it is a short drive from the coast and functions as part of the same North County cluster. Taktika — the coaching outfit behind San Diego's original padel program — runs the court and its instruction, so a resort stay is the most straightforward way for a visitor to get a lesson in this part of the county. How North County Compares to the City
The honest comparison: the city has the courts, North County has the drive time.
Head south and the numbers change quickly. Padel N9NE in Mira Mesa runs eight courts as an adidas flagship center and hosts sanctioned tournaments. Kingdom of Padel converted a Harley-Davidson warehouse in Bay Ho into six courts split between indoor and outdoor, with a restaurant-bar attached. Taktika Padel operates seven courts at Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma, and Cali Padel Club is building in Mission Valley. At the far southern end of the county, ESL Padel in Chula Vista has three indoor courts under 28-foot ceilings.
That last detail is the one North County genuinely lacks: there is no indoor padel north of the city. Every North County court is outdoor. In a coastal climate that plays fine for most of the year, but a rainy February week or a June-gloom morning has no backup plan up here. If weatherproofing matters to you, the drive to Bay Ho or Chula Vista is the trade.
The upside is obvious enough if you live in Carlsbad or Encinitas. Oceanside is 15 minutes up the 5 instead of 40 minutes down it, and the courts have an ocean two blocks away.
Costs, Memberships & Booking
For public play, Padel California is the only game in North County, and the model is membership-forward: a monthly membership at the club plus per-session court fees, with non-member bookings priced higher — reporting around the club's opening put memberships in the $40–$60 per month range and non-member court time roughly $72–$120 per 90 minutes depending on the slot. Treat those as a ballpark from reporting rather than a current rate card, and check the live price when you book through Playtomic. Court fees split four ways, which is what makes padel cheaper per person than the headline number suggests.
At Rancho Valencia and La Valle, padel is bundled into membership rather than sold by the hour, and both properties handle pricing through their membership offices. Rancho Valencia's resort side gives guests a route in that La Valle does not have.
