About The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa

The birthplace of padel in the United States. In 1993, Felipe Arnold from Argentina and Ed Thompson from Houston brought padel to American soil for the first time, erecting the country's first glass padel court on the front lawn of The Houstonian Club. More than three decades later, this historic property continues to carry the sport's legacy while operating as one of Houston's most prestigious private clubs.

The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa sits on a 27-acre wooded estate in the heart of Houston — a property that once served as the residence of President George H.W. Bush. Today it operates as a luxury hotel, a 185,000-square-foot private fitness club, a full-service spa, and a fine dining destination, all nestled within a canopy of mature trees just minutes from the Galleria.

The Courts

The Houstonian Club features 2 outdoor padel courts with international-standard dimensions, synthetic grass surfaces, and full lighting for evening play. The courts were resurfaced in May 2023 to maintain top playing conditions. Beyond padel, the racquet sports complex includes 4 indoor tennis courts with 40-foot ceilings and Classic Turf surfaces, 5 outdoor tennis courts, and 8 pickleball courts.

Programs & Coaching

The club offers a full padel program led by USPA-certified coach Chris Moore. Private lessons are available (30 min/$45, 1 hour/$85, 90 min/$120), along with group lessons scaled by size. Open play runs Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 PM for intermediate and advanced players. A Junior Padel Academy meets Mondays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 PM, and loaner and rental paddles are available for those new to the sport.

The Experience

The Houstonian is no ordinary club. Ranked by Fitness Magazine as one of the top 5 fitness centers in the U.S., the 185,000-square-foot facility houses 300+ pieces of workout equipment, three temperature-controlled pools, six exercise studios, and 180+ weekly group classes. After your match, unwind at the Trellis Spa, grab a drink at The Bar, or sit down for dinner at Tribute, the property's fine dining restaurant.

A Piece of Padel History

The Houstonian holds a singular place in American padel history. It was here that the first U.S. padel team was assembled in 1993, drawing six elite Houston-area tennis players — including Mike May, who remains involved with the club today as a padel contact. That team competed in the 1993 Tri-National Cup in Acapulco, Mexico, and The Houstonian served as the home base for the USA Padel team, which achieved a world ranking of 7th.

Location & Getting There

Located at 111 N Post Oak Ln in Houston's Uptown/Galleria area, The Houstonian offers free parking for members and hotel guests. The wooded 27-acre campus provides a secluded retreat that belies its central Houston location, just off Loop 610 near Memorial Park.

Membership & Access

The Houstonian Club operates as a private membership facility. Hotel guests receive complimentary access to the club during their stay, making it an excellent option for traveling padel players looking to play on historic courts.
