Flat forehand feedback

07 commentsu/Thephilhouse3w ago
I did a session which included working on my flat forehand but not sure the advice I was getting was the best as the coaches technique was far from perfect and seemed to contradict some other things I have read or been told! My lob and Chiquita are better than a simple flat shot especially with a bit more power. I tend flap at the ball with my wrist and struggle if the ball is coming faster or bouncing a bit higher, or is coming across me especially. It's blurry as it focused on the fence but I think you can still see the form I have. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks

You have the weight on the wrong foot before the strike and the crossing of legs before the strike limits your movability. Before strike, move to position then when you rotate your body you ”open up” by placing your weight on your right foot (you have it on left now) then step forward/weight transfer to the left foot during the strike

Not ideal, not horrible. It would be better if your feet and legs are either totally parallel to the ball path or totally perpendicular. Crossing over to meet the ball takes away a lot of control. If you fix that I think you'll find a lot of other technique problems will correct themselves.

Maybe try an open stance too. Or really sideways, but not always your front leg crossing. Keep the after swing more limited? So it's a more symmetrical swing. Little backswing preparation then hit it and don't swing your racket in front of your body too much. Unless you're hitting with a lot of power. Try using more body momentum, turn your shoulders. As an experiment, try to hit without moving your arms too much. Just turn your shoulders and your hips.  Honestly, it doesn't look too bad at all. Just keep practicing, and you will be able to relax your body more.

I have struggled—and still struggle—with my forehand. However, what has helped me is locking my wrist and rotating my whole body through the swing, all while keeping my core engaged the entire time. Also having my feet plantet when doing the shot is important.

Thanks all, why would you lose control with 45 degrees stance though? Would have thought it would be superior to a more closed stance but better than an open stance as it allows more rotation?

You're crossing your front leg too much. You want to stand sideways if you have to the time to prepare. Otherwise this is solid.
