This is now happening more often in lower stations like bronze and silver. Yes, it's a money thing. It sucks for the audience, but at least the pro earns some extra bucks since they don't earn that much as well and the amateur gets their pro experience.

> and the amateur gets their pro experience. i don't see how this could be seen as a positive in any way. rich kid paying to pretend to be a pro and we're supposed to cheer?

No I think in this case a very valid point you make. In this case, It’s point farming and ego boosting. I wish he just stuck with bronze and silvers.  But I have seen for example other players paying top pros to actually make it to the finals and win a tournament. But they have been putting in the effort and training super hard to make it, and on their own the play quite decent.

true - but repetition and self confidence and respect GOES down - since only care about Money not the game

I agree in most cases, but I watched the full game and I think Jofre did a great job keeping the motivation, staying positive and at least trying to make it happen. Kudos to Jofre to at least doing his best. I have seen other players (cannot mention names), they literally don't care anymore since they already received the money.

Embarrassing and really bad for the validity of the sport.

Rich Hong Kong family, not his first event paying a professional player to play with

it seems like that - he does not know how to how the racket - his level is so poor for platinum event - imagine if people pay for tickets to watch this match

it gives me hope! i just need a couple of thousands of euros to became pro xD

Just swap gender and sign up for the female FIP's in the middle of nowhere, they never fill anyway 😉. Free route to pro play!

Funny enough, he is higher ranked than his opponents … https://www.padelfip.com/player/lok-hei-jamie-yau/?tab=Overview#tournaments-breakdown It’s kind of crazy loophole, that someone can earn FIP points just by participating in a tournament and being directly qualified for the main draw due to their partner’s points and ranking. Top 1000 w/ 17 FIP points from 5 tournaments within 6 weeks (before this tournament).

This is a nice addendum to that Tapia playing solo thread. Here's a pro player, very far from Tapia's level, playing with a huge anchor around his neck (indescribably worse than playing solo) against two competitive players and still almost scratches out a win at 20% effort. Jofre's service games are particularly enlightening. He's just fucking around, casually producing aces and winners behind his back like he's picking daisies in the countryside.

I actually think he could’ve locked in and won. He just didn’t steal as many balls from the amateur guy as he could. But he let him play. Maybe Yau actually wanted to gain some experience. Props to him

u/lantissZX3w ago
Don't give that guy ANY props, he's a disgrace for the sports legitimacy, literally paying some one to carry him as if it was a video game.
2
u/zemvpferreira3w ago
Oh yeah absolutely, Jofre was barely even trying for most of the match. Nothing against Yau myself, lots worse than this happens in padel and no one bats an eye.

Yau has played 6x FIPs so far this year. Pays a top 100/ 200 ish ( or WR 29 in Jofre) Spanish pro to be partner, in doing so skips qualifying ( which he'd never get through) and gets smashed each time in the 1st round of 32. Disgrace to the sport. Who knows, maybe he will be Paquitos next partner?

next time he needs to pay more for the opponent so they can lose. it is so sad and bad for the sport

Jofre sold out already, gave up his Spanish flag for UAE so it doesn't surprise me that he's the one who has a side business playing with wealthy clientele in pro tournaments.

The fact they managed to win 8 games must mean this Jofre guy is a beast. I guess he knew exactly what he signed up for. I guess technically there's no rule against paying your way into a tournament. He's probably the guy's coach and took a bag, free trip etc to play in the tournament. That being said, this Yau guy is embarrassingly bad. Like 1.5 Playtomic bad.

Yau is horrible but any one of us would play this level or worse if we were being this embarrassed in front of the whole world. Commentated livestream + crowd + bunch of money on the line = piss poor performance.

Respectfully, the stream had a handful of viewers, and it's not the first time this guy has done this. I'm sure money is no issue to him either. He put himself in that situation willingly. And no, I actually don't think I would play this bad. His local opponents were actually not even that good.

they didn't win 8 games they automatically got into round of 32 so they have won 0 games together.

It was 4-6, 4-6. A game is not a match in Padel.

I'm from India and FIP bronze level tournaments in emerging countries are a joke. No standards, no quality, just a mad rush to get the points on offer.

Most reasonable fridge of all time

hilarious to see both playing on the same side and the other team still too bad to exploit it lol

Man i just watched this back...what a joke lmao. Yau must be some rich Hong Konger throwing money at Jofre to play with him.

Just watched the entire match. Even slowed down and rewind some of the points to learn something from it. I had been playing for a few years and currently higher intermediate in my local club. My gf just started. We play a match together once or twice a week. I am watching this game to learn how to play better with a weaker partner. Basically how to counter a fridge. 1. I was expecting jofre to take over the middle court and he did. Yau did well by just trying to cover the right side of his court and totally giving up the middle. This part he did well. I don't think he once tried to use his back hand to cover the mid court. 2. Yau's serve is ok for his level but definitely not for platinum. His first volley at the net is about as good as my gf - float high above the net and bounce too high on the ground. And he didn't even turn his shoulder. 3. The two opponents really try very hard to put jofre in the fridge but they just cannot help trying to score an easy winner against a top professional. Every time yau hit an easy ball across, they just cannot help but try to score the easy winner against jofre. And that's where they usually lost. Their fridge is not very good. Not disciplined enough. Can't blame them. I would have done the same. 4. Not sure if you guys overheard the conversation between jofre and yau during the rest between points. He kept telling him to just focus on putting the ball across the net in the middle. Don't try to score. Don't try for the corners. Sometimes he listened and that's where he allowed jofre to do his job. 5. I am amazed by the service skills of jofre. I watch pro games on YouTube all the time and the service side of the game is never interesting. They all look "normal". Nobody ever make a mistake. However, here we can see how good he is. 40-0 just by serving 3 balls. The Albanians couldn't even return his serve without hitting it to the glass or cage. And his serves are not fast. Just very accurate. I guess that's what yau is paying for - The experience to play at this level. If he got the money to throw at this hobby, that's his privilege. But I agree that it is not serving this sport well. There should be a regulation that the level gap between partners should not be too wide for platinum level games. For bronze and silver, just let the players have fun and make some money. Otherwise, pray hard that I don't win the lottery. You might see me playing with chingoto in the next platinum match. 💪😜

I got secondhand embarrassment from watching this game but honestly I can’t wait to see who he can pay to play next, if he can get #29, what’s to say he can’t get #1.

u/LooseCandidate3w ago
Jofre won't be tired at least for the next premier padel event.

u/SweetZealousideal8023w ago
he got paid more than 3-4 days doing PT or paid in Dubai

holy shit :D:D

6-4, 6-4? So he clearly can play.
1
u/Any_Elk74953w ago
No he’s very average. Wouldn’t survive a fip bronze. Jofre is an animal and the opponents were pretty shit. They got in by being the Albania wildcard team.
2
u/1092673w ago
Isn't Platinum 3 levels higher than Bronze though? Bronze --> Silver --> Gold --> Platinum? If he would not survive a Bronze, than he would not go 6-4, 6-4 in Platinum, no matter who his partner is right?

Yau's serve is actually pretty decent and created many chances for Jofre.

I watched this match live on YouTube. When I see how they are playing “perfectly”, I went to get carried away even i have been playing padel since 2 months :) I checked their FIP ranking and thought Jofre couldn’t find anyone so Yau joined him for this match! I think Jofre did a good job even he played alone. I think the result for Jofre is good. If he had a bit better partner, I think they could easily win.

u/Gweledigaeth3w ago
bro you are not understanding this at all lol. jofre is #29 fip rankings and plays on the PP circuit. hes doing this purely for money, he doesnt need to win.
