Smash technique

1923 commentsu/seires883w ago
I’m in the white shorts on the right. Any recs to smash ball over court / glass ? I feel my smash translates from tennis and doesn’t get enough pop and rather allows my opponent to attack the shot as it bounces off glass as seen here.

To me it looks like you went for a smash where a chancletazo was the way to go, since the ball wasnt that high you could not prepare in time and ended up doing some kind of hybrid.

This! You shouldn't smash there, the ball is not high enough. A soft overhead towards left side wall or grid seems to be the right choice. The whole point is a sequence of wrong choices in my opinion. Most of you are playing too fast, with too much power. You want to make your opponents move, and that's accomplished by playing soft and deep before eventually smashing when they're deep behind the line.

Not enough time to prepare to pop that out. Just play something low and fast and pressure them more.

In my opinion the mistake here wasn't in the technique, you simply didn't take the time to reset and build the point. Your opponent was at the net and then you immediately tried to make the point by just hitting hard while still trying to regain your position and without the opponent being really out of position, this then came to bite you.  You tried a smash while one of your opponents was still at the net, if you opted for a slow passing parallel ball there, you'd either won the point or better cemented your position at the net by pushing the opponent back. They won this point by making better tactical decisions, not necessarily better technique. Take your time and slow it down!

Thanks for the feedback !

Learn how to volley and hit with more control before you smash. Positioning also needs improvement. You need to figure out how to keep the net without slamming every ball and running to the back like fruit flies once the opponent approaches the net.

X4 would have been the shot. But you gave it too much power, just step in and a gentle tap would have been enough. X3 could be possible, bit you hit it to the side glass, basically giving them the ball back. Hit it to backglass 3/4. Even as a righty you had the angle where you were. Another option was faking a smash and doing a soft shot. Also why did you guys run backwards on the final shot? Stand your ground at the net!

Don't you have to be much closer to the net to get an X4? I don't think his situation allowed it.

Yes, he should have stepped in for a tap out.

u smashed with slice effect, if u had hit the ball flat it would have gone \*3

At beginner low intermediate I won't bother too much about the smash especially X3. But yeah u shd to be able to hit a flat smash from there but the ball needs to be higher .. about technique.. I mean u need to be sideways for smashes but getting volleys, lobs, Chiquita correct is more important cos smash technique takes the most time to perfect unless u have a high level tennis background and even then it's a bit tricky

Your issue here was your contact with the ball, you did contact at the highest point, but you instead of pronating to get the kick effect you went sideways. But the only reason you went sideways was your body position in the first place, you didn't prep for the shot. https://preview.redd.it/7300g5woxj3h1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9232b67a0198d536ba2d91163867e18e2e1b5a1f You need to stand more sideways so you can generate the power, pronate and get the Kock effect.

The guy in front of you is also quite exposed, you could have insist on his side, a high volley would be difficult to defend there as well. You hit the ball and you start to go back, instead of keep the net, and btw, your partner is completely lost \^\^, either you are on the net, or you are behind, but try to avoid the middle, at that level return balls on your feet becomes pretty difficult, try to focus in where you are in the court the balance towards the sides and avoid to run like headless chickens, last but not least talk in the middle balls, is also important, you both seem quite confused on the high lob.

I'm an ex-tennis player myself and I have similar issues. I play with some ex-volleyballers and they seem to do this easily. It's all in the wrist, but my tennistraining and conditioning holds me back there.

Ask red pants how to smash

You have to plant your feet and drop your elbow. Try to connect with the ball as high as possible.

Ignore this. Dropping elbow will do you only harm.

This, you need to plant your feet, and to me, also looks like you do the "smash" with mostly your wrist, also you barely "swing"and the little swing you do is with your wrist. Doing the smash with your wrist limits the power you can apply to it.
