I’m working on a padel court directory/filter idea and trying to understand which details actually help players choose where to book.
Some filters seem less useful because they are basically universal or too vague:
* Racket rental: most clubs seem to offer this
* Beginner friendly: usually depends more on who you play with than the club itself
The things that seem more useful are court-specific or club-specific issues, for example:
* Indoor ceiling height: can you actually lob properly?
* Sun glare on outdoor courts
* Wind exposure
* Poor lighting
* Noisy surroundings
* Leaking roofs in winter
* Court condition: bald spots, uneven sand, bad drainage, dead bounce
* Sand type: especially sand that sticks badly to shoes
* Balls getting lost because of weak/low side netting
* Cancellation policy when weather makes courts unplayable
* Level matching for tournaments and open games
* Safety rules, like enforcing racket wrist straps
* Coaching/community: active coaches, regular events, good match organization
When you choose where to book, what are the top things you actually care about?
Also curious: what “small” court or club detail has ruined a game for you before?
This. So many filters why? I always think like that you try the court you like maybe I come back . There are so Much places to play around me that the bad ones almost nobody goes there unless is cheap...
interesting.... so this feature would be useless to you overall?
Adjacent to that, on the same site, would be an aggregate table showing the different availability per court across the city.... so you don't have to check on each platform... it will show you a calendar and where the courts are available...
It’s more the club overall but I considerably mark down any club that doesn’t have exercise mats to stretch on and maybe do a light warm up before playing.
Courts wise, roof height is the big one.
In my personal order of inportance, I prefer courts that are:
indoor, available, nearby, affordable, spaceous, clean, well-lit, well-staffed, soundproofed, climate controlled.
All great points and I will also like to add non court quality related things like price, location, parking, club community, bathroom access, club cafe and shop.
First thing I care about is price. Of course I care about distance to the padel club. Also a big thing I care about in summer is the position of the sun when you're playing on the court; if, when you look at a ball (coming from a lob), it shines directly in your eyes (for me, that makes it impossible to play). And small things I think I care about is: cancellation policy, and an active community so I can find matches and people quite easily.
I care about transportation access. Ideally I can walk to a court in under 40 minutes, but a lot of clubs are in the suburbs or industrial areas and have poor transit access. I don't drive, but I often see people asking questions about parking availability and costs.
availability and price, same as everyone else here. but the booking experience itself is underrated - some clubs still make you call lol, someone mentioned it and yeah instant dealbreaker for me
what i actually wish existed is something like a lobby in an online game - you see who's queued up, join an open slot, find a fourth without knowing anyone. playtomic does bits of this but not really. good courts lose regulars not because of the surface but because there's no easy way to find people to play with
and imagine if every player had a actual rank based on their match history, not self-reported level. like you join a lobby and see the guy has 200 matches, 60% win rate, plays mostly at the net. that changes how you pick partners completely
