Putting learnings into practice in games

13 commentsu/SignificanceAny80644w ago
Hello Have been playing 1-2 games pw for a few months, haven't played any other racquet sports with any regularity before. Technique isn't great and despite having tried both group and individual lessons where the learnings are clear, I find certain learnings very difficult to use in the heat of a game, for example keeping a firm wrist / not flicking for volleys, hitting in front of body, footwork, etc. I generally just revert to type. Has anyone else had this issue and overcame it? If yes, how?

You need to go to your games with the mindset of practicing one specific shot/technique from your lessons. You are going to miss a lot, but eventually that one shot/technique will come naturally. Once you feel that you don’t need to remember “how to grab it”, “how to position” or “how to hit it”, now you move to the next shot/technique and keep repeating until one day everything will come naturally. Last advice (if you are the competitive type) don’t be scared to play against better players, this is one of the fastest ways to improve. It’s going to force you to demand more from yourself rather than always playing against the same people and learning how they play. Good luck!

You just need to keep trying. It takes time to ”update” your body with your new technique. It’s ok that you do it the old way in the heat of the moment, just acknowledge to yourself that ”oops, flicked my wrist there” so that you keep registering when you do it the wrong way. Unfortunately there is no quick fix, with time the new technique will settle. Just keep getting playtime and eventually it will. And make keep taking classes so you learn all the right techniques.

Is simply really hard to implement this. Don't beat yourself up over it. It takes time and a lot of practice. My advice would be to focus on one thing you want to implement at a time.
