  2. Is this normal? 32M playing padel singles.
❔ Question ❔

Is this normal? 32M playing padel singles.

1964 commentsu/k4zabdin5d ago
Is this normal for a 32M playing padel singles? I usually hit around average 180bpm. Should I get myself checked?

Half of the people in this sub can’t even give proper racquet advice, what makes you think we can give you medical advice? Call a doctor or something. Your body is not the same as whoever will leave a comment saying it is or is not normal. Only your doctor can tell.

Calling a doctor for this seems a bit excessive. Why not ask here if other people get similar results? That's an easy way to judge if it is somewhat normal or totally off the charts.

31M here and I get similar results in an intense game without switching sides. Already did some heart exams and everything seems fine. https://preview.redd.it/ga7esu2kh7yg1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4093453e7f9fbeebf1c405ef935e59fbe4e98e35

You need to reset your Zones, cause 1 hour in zone 5 means you should be dead 20 times over😂

u/Mohinder_DE5d ago
Do you know your max heartbeats from running ? Was this measured with a chest strap ? Did you drink energy drinks before or take Rhodolia ? This will raise your heartbeat up to 20 beats. My garmin sometimes gives me really high readings on the couch, when i did not take it off and wash and dry it properly, and i will not trust it on zone 5. Did you put on sunscreen. If it is wrist monted is really higher than this wrist bone bump, it should not sit on zhe wrist bone, i wore my watch to low , near the hans for along tiw. Depends on the level of opponents and if they can make me run like a poor bunny, but at 53M normally below 130 average, 46 to 50 beats on the couch. Try cycling to the club, if it is just 20 to 25 mins away, thats a good warmup and cooldown.

u/k4zabdinOP5d ago
No chest strap and no energy drinks prior to playing. I think it’s a combination of being rather unfit and playing intensely. Since it’s singles, I’m running for every ball and by the end of session I was shattered. This usual happens each time I play on a weekly basis so I think that answers that. Seems like similar folk have similar stats when playing singles.

u/Im_not_Spartacus5d ago
Are you wearing a chest strap? If not the reading will be very inaccurate with all the swinging and moving about. A 180+ HR would be you essential redlining like you were doing repeated all out sprints. Unless you are sprinting about the court like a madman for extended rallies I can't see that HR being right. Mine tends to sit around 80-110bpm

[https://www.youtube.com/@TheQuantifiedScientist](https://www.youtube.com/@TheQuantifiedScientist) does scientific reviews on smartwatches with emphasis on their sensors. Apple has one of the best sensors out there. They defo need to see a doctor cos I track mine, and it dominates zone 3 and 4.
1
u/HuevosRancheros_4d ago
Their zones are just set incorrectly. By definition zone 5 is only maintainable for 3 minutes maximum.
1
u/theNicky5d ago
That does seem high but fwiw I find playing singles to be \_much\_ more of a workout because you have to run for every single ball and never get a breather while your partner is covering the ball. It's such a great workout and one of the things I love about it.
3
u/Davetheduck3d ago
Your heart was working harder than it needed to because your aerobic base is thin right now. As you play more regularly, the same effort will produce lower average HR. Nothing alarming here, but if you’re doing this weekly, adding some Zone 2 cardio in between (easy jogging, cycling) would make a noticeable difference within 4–6 weeks.

u/Deftek5d ago
Heart rate is enormously variable - without doing a proper max heart rate test (you can look up how to do this) the numbers are likely pretty meaningless. There can easily be a 30bpm range for one persons zone 5 vs another persons, so it’s likely your tracker is just calibrated a bit low. Zone 5 is considered super high intensity than can be sustained for between 1 and 10 minutes depending on your athleticism. If you’re clocking more than that, it’s not zone 5 for you - so don’t worry about it.

u/inaki_k5d ago
This is not good, nor healthy!! You're straining your heart and cardiovascular system! You must feel horrible after a match like this... Please check with a doctor as soon as possible. In addition to what other people have said (medication, use of stimulants...), are you asthmatic? In my case, untreated asthma was causing something similar, although less pronounced. Treating the asthma has brought my performance to normal levels. Take care of yourself and your body, my friend!
2
u/IllegalGrapefruit5d ago
I think you're just a bit unfit perhaps? There is no way you actually are in zone 5 all that time by the way, that would be impossible, so your heart rate zones are off too. But yes, the heart beat is high but nothing dangerous. See a doctor if you want assurances

u/Rackelhahn895d ago

Played a UK grade 5 comp on Sunday and this was the most intense game we had. Additional context: First thing in the morning, coffee 45 mins before the game, bit of nerves going into the first game of the game, managed to get it done in 60 mins. 31 M, 52 VO2 max. https://preview.redd.it/f3z9nw5m3ayg1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bc6d1ffb3ad6ccecf0e47c9843283be55758772

u/cmc_9204d ago
No that isn't normal. Mine is majority Zone 1 and 2 and peaks into zone 3. I am late 30s but I am pretty fit and active. Naturally if you're not fit it will be higher but living in zone 5 seems very high/taxing. For me to get into zone 5 I have to be doing flat out sprints for 45-60 seconds with little rest. Work on getting fitter and monitor it, it should eventually come down and you'll be more in zone 3 and 4.

u/Klutzy_Anxiety_11174d ago
How are your zones configured compared to Max Heart-rate? Is your HRmax correct? Im sorry to say. But the time in zone 5 seems way to high.
1
u/EmergencyDizzy4042d ago
How do you measure it? Chest measurement or a clock on the wrist? Latter might produce quite large errors given that your hands are moving constantly. 180 bpm average sounds quite a high for longer game. Of course one might peak something like that but avg might be normally around 130-150 depending on intensity, rally lenghts, ambient temp etc

1
u/rui_costa18993d ago
Your heart rate zones are wrong. Being unfit does not mean that your heart beats more or less....everyones effort is related to their own personal zones. You do seem to have a high max pulse though...and your zones need to be adjusted accordingly.
1
u/Worried_Albatross8605d ago
That’s pretty high. I remember wearing a whoosh band over summer once during an intense match middle of the day, in the sun, in 27+ degrees heat. And I got into the 180s a couple of times, but not for such a sustained period. It does depend on your age, and physical fitness I guess (35 y/o male)

u/Introvertsaremyth5d ago
If you can you might ask your doctor to schedule a treadmill stress test and get your baseline heart health. It’s a good thing to have that data from your 30s anyway. When you cousin took the defibrillator cpr certification training the nurse told them the defibrillators that get the most use are at the trampoline parks when there are corporate events and unfit people go crazy jumping and spike their heart rates. I think this is why in general the advice is to work up to cardio intensity slowly overtime. So maybe add low intensity swimming or running on your off padel days.

Hey Apple Watch gang. What activity do you select when you play Padel? I generally select tennis or pickleball but I do find it a bit annoying there’s no Padel option (unless I’ve missed it).
1
u/CoffeeBuck04d ago
Pickleball. Would be good if they had padel but guess it’s pretty irrelevant as it’s the same type of activity.

Do you feel like you literally can’t take a breath when you hit zone 5? If it was your zone 5 truly then you would be puking lactic Acid and probably lost muscle control at some point. Amateurs can do it for 1-2 minutes. Elite marathoners like Kipchoge can do 3-6 minutes of zone 5 risking hitting "a wall" I would say you either get wrong measurements(wrist is never gonna be accurate, doesn’t matter the cost of the device you use) or your zones should be higher. There is many people who got way higher Max HR and it doesn’t mean they are unhealthy or anything. Genetically you could have higher max heart rate.

u/BlackBrokeSun4d ago
I am 52 M and play twice weekly for 1.5 hours each time without much break in between. I rarely hit zone 5. Zone 4 is anaerobic which means you are without oxygen. I used to be very high in Zone 4 however in the last game I make subtle changes one of which was to take small steps even at rest or when the ball wasn't mine to hit. Earlier I would take the shot and become somewhat stationary. By constantly moving I kept myself in the aerobic zone. I take 1 pill in morning for my blood pressure which goes slightly above border without medication. Here is my last game using Samsung Watch 8. Maybe your watch is not reading your pulse correctly. Nevertheless, as a precaution consult a cardiologist as soon as possible. Wishing you the best. https://preview.redd.it/y6bshos4nayg1.png?width=1345&format=png&auto=webp&s=3eb6d350fdb6bc054ff6ddc51491d738c7221760

u/Typical-Ad-96254d ago
Use a chest strap. That is the real accurate measurement. If it is still like this then be worried. I have a hard time believing it will show your his with a chest strap
1
u/cefell4d ago
General rule of thumb for max heart rate is 220 less your age. So that means you’re operating at your max consistently for an hour. Not good in my opinion! Take a minute or two between sets to get your rate down and improve recovery !
1
u/TheFailSnail4d ago
Sounds high. My heartrate occasionally dips into Z3, but is usually in Z2. This sounds like your watch is malfunctioning.
1
u/TimMonteverde4d ago
It could be that Apple has got your heart rate zones all wrong. I make an app called MOTRA. Im bias but our algorithm does a better job at figuring out what your max hr and hr zones are. If you sign up sync your apple health data, as long as we have at least 10 workouts in the last 90 days our algorithm should really help you figure out if what Apple is telling you there is correct or not. I think it’s highly unlikely you genuinely spent that long in zone 5 else you should have been completely floored afterwards and probably for a couple days recovering also. My guess is your max hr is much higher than typical for your age, Apple is not accounting for this. Try out MOTRA and let me know. [motra website](https://www.motraapp.com/)

I'm a 20y/o male, high performance athlete and this was very hard tournament match of about 2 hours. It looks like you're not resting enough between Points, here you can clearly see where sets end and when sides were changed

Max heartrate for a 32M would be generally around 190 bpm. So your's is probably a bit higher. So no it's not 'normal', but not unheard of.
