Double bouncing ball in the serve box - Is it out?

434 commentsu/uhud345d ago
Recently one of the club I was playing all the players and staff started to calling all the serves are mistaken if the ball is bouncing twice in the opponent area. They claimed it's should be either go out of the area at the second bounce nor hit the glass. Otherwise they claimed the serve to be out. Like this slices weak serves that hitting double bounce in the opponent area, they claimed in that club this is out. So i took this as rule to my mind. Then yesterday I was playing in another club in Asia and other team make the same serve, I claimed that's out. This player was seems much more beginner then me. So he accept it. Then the match ended up draw. Then he ask to the host, and the confusion start bigger. Some people says yes it's out, some says no, it's not. Nobody know what's the real answer. Is there anyone in here can tell me what's exactly the rule in playbook?

If the served ball bounces twice in the receiving opponents box, it is an ace. Not a fault

Rule 6.5: The ball is served from the right side of the court it should pass diagonally over the net towards the receiving box of service of the person receiving the ball. It must bounce within the lines that limit this box. In the first instance the serve must go into the receiver’s box located at his left side, and, when one side wins the point, it is time for the following service and the ball must go into the receiver’s box located at his right side, and so on alternatively. \- Ball must bounce within the lines that limit the box - it does not sat it cant bounce twice Rules 7: 1. The serve is a fault if: a) The server infringes Rule 6 “The Service”, points 1) to 6). b) The server misses the ball when trying to hit it. c) The ball bounces outside the receiver’s service box (the lines are counted as good). d) The ball hits the server, his companion or any object worn or carried by either. e) The ball bounces in the receiver’s service box and touches the metallic fence around the court before the second bounce. f) The ball bounces in the receiver’s service box and bounces out of court directly through the gates of a court without a safety zone and therefore with no out-of-court play authorized. So it is NO fault if the ball bounces twice

Thank you! This is how I’ve played for the last 25 years but I was unsure if something had changed. If it wasn’t like this then the troll dejada serve would be ilegal

You have played for 25 years? Cool! Putting us who have only played a couple of years to shame

Normalize checking the rulebooks before asking questions.

This is possibly THE most frequently asked question and frankly I have no idea where the confusion comes from. If a serve bounces twice in the receivers area it is an ace. So yes, you can indeed do a "drop shot" serve, only that is usually a bad idea unless your opponents are really slow. That's why you never see the pros do it.

Interesting. This was raised yesterday at my club. With no definitive answer. So thanks to all that have responded. Ill take it to my club. This only came ip as we had a number of first timers and serves were “underpowered” which caught a number of the experienced guys out. 🤣

This is stupid. Why would it be out. What even is the reasoning for calling out?

Using that serve to try "trick" the received is perceived as bad manners at many beginner-intermediate level communities. At some point, this led to the false conception that it is not only bad manners but also illegal, that's why this is like the most frenquently asked question in this sub. Nobody at high intermediate/advanced level does it because it directly gives the net to the opponents, but at low levels it cad lead to some "feel bad" aces if the receiver is taken off guard.

Lol are people really such snowflakes? Bad manners to serve why? Its a serve thats usually detrimental for the server if you are paying any attention at all.

It’s point to the server, whether the second bounce inside the box or outside the box as long as the first bounce is in the correct box.

If you're recieving a serve and it bounces twice, it's your f**k up for being too slow 😅

And here we go again! Like this hasn't been asked 1 million times already

Also any search will answer it immediately: *"If a served ball bounces twice in the receiver’s service box, it is considered a valid serve, an "ace", and the serving team immediately wins the point. The returner must hit the ball before the second bounce."* However, people who have been given contradicting advice in person need more confirmation than Google results or an old Reddit theread. They want discussion and live replies. This is why there will always be discussion threads over repeating topics, forever, in all forums or social media.

Padel's rulebook is a complete mess in any of its variants so it's understandable that we face these situations

I think the confusion comes from beginners' training that states something like "the serve must bounce off towards the back glass" and does not mention the drop shot option. I have been to quite a few beginners' trainings (with my kids, colleagues and friends) and the coaches usually describe the proper serve as something that lands near the far end of the service box. The short serve option is usually not mentioned, thus people new to the game don't realize this is possible or legal.

I often mix up my serves with a dropshot serve. I guess it's their club so they can decide the rules but official padel rules state that it's allowed as other commenters have posted from the official IPF rulebook.

Sorry but this is wrong! The official rules allows for serving "short" however in certain friendly games/clubs it is considered "rude" but fully legal. Rule 6 and 7 as quoted above indicates what is a "fault" and therefore everything else is allowed.
