Padel serve error?

031 commentsu/No_Expression5156d ago
Hi everyone, lately I’ve been seeing opponents and teammates serving with the racket head pointing upwards more often. The ball is tossed onto the ground as normal – though it’s a bit debatable whether it’s above belly button height or not – and then hit with a slice, the racket pointing upwards, at a very high speed. Is that allowed? Edit: Link for an example: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8rhO9lXgTo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8rhO9lXgTo)

I'm not sure what the racket pointing upwards and the ball getting sliced have to do with a service being legal or not.

the motion is up to down. Like a sliced forehand volley.

Up to down motion is perfectly legal, it's how you're supposed to do it.

I see this as well. Strange that no professional serves this way… i think it s illegal

If it's about belly button height, it's fine.

I think i understand what you are asking. If the racket is “pounting upwards” then what you are saying is the ball logically must be above hip height. If the racket is vertical and pointing upwards then if the ball IS at hip height then your hand must be like knee height. (Which ergonomically is pretty much impossible) So I think if someone is hitting the ball when the racket is vertical then the ball HAS to be above hip height (Obviously that’s if I understand the question )

Thats exactly what i mean! Thank you

You can hold the racket any way you please and move it any way you want. As long as you hit the ball below the belly button, you're good to go.

In all fairness i hate the hip/belly button button rule. Let's give taller players another advantage over the small players

You can serve by hitting the side of the racket if you really want, it has nothing to do with it.

OP might have mixed up with the rules for a **volley serve in pickleball**, especially section *7.C.2*: >7.C **Volley Serve.** The service motion for a volley serve must comply with Rules 7.C.1 through 7.C.4. > > 7.C.1 **Upward Arc.** The server’s paddle must be moving in a clear upward arc when the paddle contacts the ball. > 7.C.2 **Paddle Head.** The highest point of the paddle head must clearly not be above the highest part of the server’s wrist joint when the paddle contacts the ball. > 7.C.3 **Ball Height.** The ball must clearly be no higher than the server’s waist when the paddle contacts the ball. > 7.C.4 **Forehand or Backhand.** The serve can be made with a forehand or backhand motion. > 7.C.5 **Fault – Illegal Volley Serve.** When the server violates Rule 7.C.1, 7.C.2, or 7.C.3, it is a fault against the server. Source: https://usapickleball.org/docs/rules/USAP-Official-Rulebook.pdf Edit: never mind. Just saw OP confirmed another explanation.

Edit. for some reason i cant post a picture (SS from youtube). I've paused it, and you can clearly see the "yellow" ball there, he's hitting a little high, I'd say 10cm higher than rules. but the motion/movement is not illegal or weird, it's just he didnt give enough space to serve so he couldnt tuck his elbow enough to hit it lower. you can hit downwards, with slice, at belly high, as a serve. This one? if it was an "ace" I'd say fault, if not i'd keep playing.

He is contacting close to shoulder height, which makes it an illegal serve.
