Partner would just play tennis and refuse to go to the net

I just need a place to vent. Is there another subreddit for people like me?

Why is “not going to the net” considered tennis? Padel is doubles. In doubles, beyond beginner level, tennis players run to the net all the time. The one single thing I would consider “tennis “ in padel is never let a ball go past you and always block everything. If people stay at the back in padel, they are beginners in tennis and beginners in padel.

Always makes me laugh! I come from a decent level of tennis and when people say they can’t adapt well because they want to stay at the back, I instantly know they were crap at tennis too 😂

I'm perfectly capable of being crap at tennis and a bit more crap at padel

I was playing with randoms recently and both my partner and one of the opponents were playing tennis. Both adding topspin to every shot, then trying to block those shots. Both firmly at the back of the court.

Cause they talk about single tennis as most people who says tennis is better then padel

because in tennis one is at the back and one is at the front.

That is beginner tennis. The goal of the person at the back is to get to the net as well and finish the point, just like padel. It is the singles where you can stay at the back

Been there. Literally two days ago. Just played tennis from the baseline. But I couldn’t complain too much because I seemingly forgot how to hit a ball that match.

No wonder, a bad partner pulls you down like quicksand.

This is exactly how to do it, one of the key rules in padel is to always blame your partner no matter what ;)

This is very true.

Let them take all the balls at the back and have fun watching them run from one side to the other. Once you lose the match because of them, switch partners and play against them for revenge.

That’s a good strat. I was hoping the guy would listen to my advice as all others did before him. In the end he was immune to becoming a better player.

Legit played a game with a partner blike this two days ago. Told my partner like 10 times please come to the net after serve/when theyre back whatever blah blah. Bro just answers yes and still stays back. When Im serving he was just standing besides me like bruh. Of course we lost the match. So frustrated sometimes with partners like this. I’d rather just save my time and money than go play an unwinnable match. That’s why I really hate playing with random people.

most tennis players i know who get into Padel just want to be at the next constantly, amazing volleys and pretty good smashes, they all just struggle with defending and playing in the corners. maybe you just got stuck with a bad everything player.

Feel your pain. Booked into an open match against I guy I know and his friend. My partner is a random, slightly lower rated (on paper) but I thought it's close enough to make it competitive still... I was wrong. He basically refused to move in front of the service line unless absolutely forced to, at which point he would retreat back again. He was okay off the glass, but any overhead would be just nudged back with no intent to do anything. He was basically a get out of jail free card for the oppo.

Is he old? Usually old people do that or not exactly fit
1
u/notwearingbrasOP5d ago
He was like sub 30 and fit

u/bennyrosso5d ago
Then there is no reason he should learn the importance of gaining the net :D good luck!

Just search for another partner

Maybe a squash player? I can tell you no one is more desperate to get to net than a recently switched tennis player. We cant hit a flat one handed backhand and certainly can't defend anything off the wall, but our volleys are already the best on the court.

Nobody plays volleys now days in tennis unless u play only doubles if u r old with squeaky knees. It's baseline mostly. Shitty tennis players stay back cos they might have a good top spin forehand and they want to play it all the time. Squash players adjust faster cos they love the glass and play most of their shots down iykwim.

Volleys are what transfer over by far the best. Volleys were my weakness in tennis, but in pádel, I'm a god at the net. Meanwhile, as you say, squash players are comfortable with the glass so they like to stay back.

Happens all the time, it's painful. I've also played with very good players that are quick to the net on their good shots but completely neglect to do it on yours. All you can really do is keep the emotion out of your voice and tell them. Then if they ignore you, fine, move on.
