Just heard this from some player interview on 4th set, and he was quoting Bela on it.
Pretty crazy when you think about it. Of all the pairs in the world only Tapia/Coello would not make a change. All other pairs, at least one player would switch immediately, and in most cases both.
Actually only Chingotto would probably not switch, and maybe Lebron. All others would dump their partners in a second.
Its kind of sad TBH.
Tbh I don't think Galan would want to switch either, even if Coello was technically a stronger option for him. People always underestimate how important the team's mutual wellbeing is for some of these top players. Why do you guys think he left Lebron when he was still at the top. Every interview I watch of them you can see how much Chingalan appreciate each other. He would most certainly not dump Chingo in a second for a "what if".
Dude, he’d dump him in a second if Coello asked him. Chingo is great charachter, but with Coello he’d be no1. There would he 0 hesitation.
LeBron was toxic and he still stayed for ages. They didn’t split at the top. They split when way down. Galan actually talked about how much crap he put up with because the results were good and that he regrets not ending it sooner.
We simply don't know what he would do. Both Coello and Galán have coaches/academies they have worked with during their whole careers. Jorge Martinez (Galan's coach) always advocates about training a team and not an individual player, he wants to be in full control, he doesn't like to share with another coach.
I don't think Coello would come back from Miami and ditch Prato. Would Galán ditch Martinez? Would Martinez change his model for a player who lives in Miami and can never train with Galán?
I think that if Galan could pick Coello he should, not because Coello would be a better partner for him than Chingo but rather because Coello is Tapia's perfect partner and breaking that would benefit him immensely.
This sport was dominated for almost 15 years by two people who would barely speak with each other. The only thing that matters is being at the top, everything else is nice PR speak.
That's just the way professional sports are. Any player has to make the right decisions for their career and take advantage of every opportunity. Before Tapia/Coello, anyone would have switched to pair with Galán/Lebron.
Just the same as Lewis Hamilton going to Ferrari or a long list of other players who have left a beloved team to play where they think there is more opportunity (even though it sometimes doesn't work out).
I think it adds to the suspense and drama as they all try to figure out which pairings work best.
What is sad to me is that I love Tapia/Coello together but it is boring to watch them win all the time. I'm not sure how the sport should react to that. It's great that things are getting a bit more shaken up lately!
We all agreed that padel is interesting because of the double game play. But this partnership thing is overtaking the game.
The best way is for 4 players to play round robin Vs each other. They add up the score for each game and you find the winner among all these 4. This way, you take away who's pairing with whom but still having double play.
What professional players want is to be #1, period. That's why any player who is not at #1 would immediately switch partners with a player above him: to get closer to being #1. The want is the ranking, not the partner. If Tapia/Coello were #5 and 6 in the world they would be angling to switch partners too.
There's this bizarre outlook that the Tapiello and Chingalan bromances are somehow stronger than numbers but that's pure PR fantasy only supported by a stagnated ranking at the top. Let Augsburger/Lebron win 5-6 tournaments or one of the top seeds get a serious injury and that fantasy will drop immediately regardless of the power of friendship.
