Opponents staying at the back

726 commentsu/bachaterol1w ago
Recently we played against opponents that constantly stayed at the back, even after they lobbed us, and that broke our flow and made things challenging. I think our main challenge was that we didn't know what to do when we got a lob, as lobbing it back gave them an easy high ball or overhead to return from the back and we had trouble blocking these back at the net. Or they just lobbed it back, which forced us to run back. My theory was that we needed to do more Chiquitas to pull them to the front (neither of us are very good with them) or strong bajadas for higher bounces from the glass, which rarely happened. It got frustrating after a while because we kept losing easy points to the opponents that rarely come to the net. What would you do in our situation?

Play to the corners and fence with slice

No chiquitas to force them to the front, let them saty at the back, that is exactly where you want them to be. No stronger Bandejas that bounce higher, softer/shorter Bandejas that bounce lower from the glass! How where you losing points exactly? If they stay at the back always, you should be winning the vast majority of the points.

Exploit their feet and corners. No need to lob back if they’re behind, just go to the net and show them why in padel you always try to win the net

Ignore all the Chiquita advice - it's wrong, the point of Chiquita is to get the net position when they are in front and you are in the back. You try to gain the net with slow bandeja and don't get too close so that they easily lob. From the net play balls with a lot of slice to avoid high bounce to force them to defend and give you a bad lob. Do a patter of volleys - corner than middle to force them out of position.

Play low, take the net, hit a winner? What's the problem?

If you have plenty of space because they stayed back, play a chiquita and force them to move.

If they dont push after a lob, then theres no need for you to lob back. You're under zero pressure on playing bandejas or bajadas, so they can be weak, shoulder high and in the middle of the net because no one will be there to punish it.

classic "parking at the back" problem. when you get lobbed, don't lob back — that's exactly what they want. take it out of the air with a controlled volley deep to the corner. soft, not hard. you keep the net, they stay defending. if you have to let it bounce, play a short bajada instead of a lob. forces them forward out of their comfort zone. accept that winners come from making them uncomfortable for 4-6 shots, not 1-2. patience beats power against back-dwellers. on chiquitas — 20 minutes of focused practice with a friend gets you 80% of the way. one feeds from back, one drops at net. doesn't need to be a full session. also worth noting: some teams stay back because they're not fit enough for the net. if they're breathing heavy between points, the long-rally game works in your favor.

Thank you! This is the most comprehensive and complete advice so far, that also shows that you read and understood my question. I appreciate.

A lot of terrible answers here!! “Lots of slice”, “chiquita and rush the net” etc. No. They’re at the back which means you don’t need to risk *anything* about your shots. It sounds like risky shots and standing too close to the net when your opponents aren’t in any trouble is the thing that is making this more difficult than it needs to be. Play the simplest, risk-free shot towards them, the kind that bounces on the line. It can be as loopy as you like - whatever guarantees that you don’t miss. We know they like to lob back. So don’t commit to rushing the net and getting yourself lobbed. By all means move up, but not so close to be net where you can’t quickly and comfortably get back into position to take their lob in the air. When you do, you’ll have way more options to play a tougher shot (but still controlled). Put them under pressure with your favourite overhead, work in some angles etc. Only when they’re really under pressure should you fully take the net and put away the point. Now IF they catch on and start playing chiquitas and rushing up, that’s your sign to cover the space in front of you a bit more. But you will have got them out of their pattern at least. Otherwise play low risk shots, generate overheads that you are already well-positioned for, and start applying pressure.

No need to lob back. Your hunch was correct - play to the open space using a chiquita, or alternatively a bajada from the lob, or just flat. Anything else than a lob.

A lot of slice near their feet, but Chiquita's are not a bad idea either if you can do it

if they stay at the back after a lob they are giving you the net for free. First thing is only one of you should run back to get the lob, the other should stay at the net. The one who goes back should simply play a normal ball aimed at the opposing service line, forcing them react quickly because if it bounces before the line they'll have to play an uncomfortable half-volley, if it bounces behind the line they'll have to play with the wall. Both options give you plenty of time to reach the net while the ball is travelling so you can be there in time to volley (even if it's a block volley). No need to play that ball with high speed or power, if it goes deep (aimed at service line) and slowish, its better than deep and fast. Slowish gives you more time to reach the net next to your teammate, and speedier ball makes for a high bounce after the wall, you want a speed that bounces neutrally from the wall, not strongly off of it. Never play a lob to opponents at the back btw. The sole purpose of a lob is passing the other players so you can rush the net. If they're at the baseline then A. you cannot pass them and B. the net is already yours for the taking, no need to lob.

No need to do a Chiquita to force them to the net. If they’re staying back after lobs you get free bandeja/viboras without needing to play them close to the net. Hit it and go right back to the net till they mess up. Chiquitas are useful for playing to your opponents feet when they’re already up by the net, but if they don’t want the net you take it and get every point

Patience. If they do.not attack I'll keep playing chiquitas to regain the net and hard low hits to the glass. Eventually, they will make mistakes and you'll have advantage at the net. Patience, Consistency and creativity.

Target one at the time, move them around varying the pattern. Target back hands, and love over non dominant hand

if they always stay back, hit it hard towards the backglass.

Drop shot. Chiquita. Angle to fence. Hard bajada. Hard slice. Thing is when opponent always stay at the back, it opens up the angle and a lot of options become available

Oponent at the back is free net Position. Free net Position is free win.

It’s extremely difficult to win points when you’re not at the net, that’s why a lot revolves around staying at the net or winning back the net. One you’re at the net, just harass one of the opponent until he makes an unforced error or gives you an easy ball. Of course, you need to not make any unforced errors while at the net.

Smash the F out of em , offcourse if u don't have a good kick smash play good bandeja or vibora and create angles with volleys moving one person left right left..
