I play on the right side, and so, when receiving the first serve of a new game, I often face an opponent who stays back.
So my first return ends up being a basic groundstroke to keep them back. Naturally their partner drifts back and now we’re stuck in a ground stroke battle.
I’ve tried lobbing, but if they’re already back, they can fire a nice overhead at my body when I’m at the net.
I have tried chiquitas, but when someone’s back it’s not as effective (as they can step in after the first bounce and retreat after their shot).
What else should I try?
Literally just play any slow / medium paced shot and go take the net?
If they chase the chiquita down they should be playing from low and you volley back behind them.
Play a medium ground stroke to them and start closing the net and block / volley?
I even just play high lobs at them and walk in as a piss take because most people playing like that arent good enough to smash a good bajada back at you.
They might rip a winner once in a blue moon, but you'll win the point by taking the net more often than not.
Dont play high speed shots if you want to get to the net.
Try playing a slow flat shot from the back and the moment you hit the ball start moving up to the net (second post is enough - you dont have to touch the net), stop and return their ball as volley or overhead. Voila - you reached the net.
If they are willingly surrendering the net on a serve (which is fundamentally strange), play whatever shot you want and move forward.
Why would you also stay at the back and trade groundstrokes? I believe that’s called tennis.
