❔ Question ❔

How do you remember what your coach told you after a session?

I know it might sound silly, like daaaa.... just remember what coach told you, but I'm not young any more and it is hard for me to remember everything. After every session my coach does a quick verbal recap at the end. What we worked on, what I did well, what needs improvement next time. It lasts maybe like 1-2 minutes, I record him and then do a note after. By the time I get home I've forgotten half of it. So I keep notes(Image attached) It helps but it feels a bit messy and I have no real way to see how I've progressed over weeks or months(being training for 3 month). Just a long list of notes with no structure. I do mark what I was training during the week with ✅ and 🔴. It got me wondering how other players handle this. And also, what's happening on the coach's side? Does your coach keep any record of what you worked on, or is it all in their head too? https://preview.redd.it/pbhjp04qvbog1.jpg?width=322&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e40d2c078b49ed820ef8cde4549453e9e6ebbb3

This is too much. You train for muscle memory, not your brain. That is why I remember 2-3 things after a session and work on that during my games. Also, don’t trust the one coach you have tried. I have been to 5 diff coaches now and all have varying strategies on how to teach and play. Try that, cause it helps find out what works for you and your confidence.

I had 2 coaches teach me volleys none sticked. 1 other was highly technicus now my volleys gave transformed

I've also training with 2 coaches, one more technical and another one is more game play oriented.

Thank you for advice, I've already stopped that. Was to much admin for me in the end. Now I do exactly what you said "I remember 2-3 things after a session and work on that during my games."

If you can, play a game right after the coaching. Playing for even like half an hour, where the training can come into practice, helps to make it stick.

It can often be a painful experience putting into practice what you've learnt... especially if you've had success at intermediate level playing unconventionally. I'd like to put more of what I learn into practice... but I find if it's a competitive game I just revert to type. If it's an easier game I feel more relaxed to change up a few things.

So true about the difference between competitive vs casual games. When I’m playing competitively, I don’t really pay attention to my footwork, body positioning etc..

True, a friendly match would be the best. If you have a group lesson, sticking around afterwards with the group and playing a bit helps a lot to get it into your system.

Usually that is not possible because I'm training 1:1 and also most of the time court is booked for another session. But I agree, playing right after will 100% help to remember what I was training. Now I just recording a short audio messages in whatapp and send them to myself.

I use an app called ideashell to voice record what happened the entire session and any pertinent tips: 3-4 mins. Using AI it transcribes it and gives me a comprehensive summary and then I can ask: give me 3 things I should do to improve my [insert shot/ tactic] in my next session - then I review before the next session. It has been really handy for me. Each training session now feels more robust and adding to knowledge rather than forgetting everything that came before - and the difference on court has been noticeable. Btw I’m not paid to promote it - it’s just really worked for me. I imagine it can be done with any AI but I like having all my training notes organised in one place rather than different AI chats.

Ohh that is cool! I've switch to WhatsApp+Audio messages but there is no summary, so maybe either ideashell worse of trying or ChatGPT. Does ideashell track progression over time or is it more session by session, like can you ask it to do that? And curious whether you can look back and see improvement over months.

You basically track your own progression - ideashell is basically a tool for audio transcription and generating mind maps or summaries and getting more out of your own content, or any recorded content. Saying that, I have found the questions it asks intuitive and forces some self-reflection to identify where I’m going wrong on certain shots and how to hammer in the correct technique every single time. It’s not a coach per se but for my own progression have found it very useful. For example, I struggled with viboras- either positioning, not having the racket in the right starting position, not using my left hand to track, not rotating or being loose enough with my arm and not able to whip around the ball. Obviously trying to correct all that in a single session would lead to frustration so took it step by step: ideashell gave me 3 things to focus on - getting racket in right position behind your head and get into the right hitting position as early as possible and use left hand to guide. Every single time. Once that’s nailed in, the following session move on to the other steps. Best way to track your own progression is video recording yourself - the before, during and after. A lot of time we think we’re doing something but we’re not even close 😅 my coach tells me to “over-exaggerate” the movement when learning. Over time this becomes more natural and fits your own style of play.

I love this!! That’s such a good idea. I’ll try to implement it myself. Thank you!

Try it and let me know how it went, for me it became a lot of admin to keep up with notes after every training session.

i’m 29 and already struggling to remember my lessons hahaha. there’s just so much to take in. for me, logging also helps me process what i actually did during those flow states i’m trying to stay in while training. i train in pairs, so after each lesson i usually ask my partner a couple of questions about what stood out to him or what felt important that day. he does the same for me. after that, i fill in a template i made (well… mostly chatgpt helps me with that), and i log everything in my notion page/database. i even had chatgpt help me set up the notion page itself. here’s what it looks like: [https://gratis-fly-6d1.notion.site/2ffa22d6a9e28145b05bed737d86fb09?v=2ffa22d6a9e281c8a193000ccfe58229](https://gratis-fly-6d1.notion.site/2ffa22d6a9e28145b05bed737d86fb09?v=2ffa22d6a9e281c8a193000ccfe58229) when you hover over a name you're able to open the page and see what i logged (it's dutch)

Really love the Japanese fish style on your background and the level of detail that you put into col and rows =) But honestly, how do you deal with the admin work that comes with this much tracking? I tried keeping simple notes and eventually just switched to sending myself WhatsApp voice memos because the admin became such a chore. Aside from the workload though, the setup looks awesome. Keep at it!

i ask ChatGPT to fill out the template and just do a quick summary however i like it. mostly me freestyling a text at what comes to mind. Chat spit it out in template form and i paste it in the database. it could take less than 2 minutes. i also see this working if you ask Chat to fill out the template and you just sending your voice note. if that makes sense.

I take notes as well on my phone as soon as the session is done, I try to do it before even leaving the place. My notes are not as detailed as yours, it's just some tips and the issues he noticed much.

Honestly I stopped because It became to much hustle. Now I wont even type anything, I just record an audio message to myself. It kind hard to track the progress but at least it is less friction for me.

I had the same problem so I built an app for it (PadelTracker). You log sessions with what you worked on and it tracks progress over time instead of just a pile of notes. That said, recording your coach like you're doing is already smarter than most people.

I looked for app you mentioned in AppStore, but everything I found is for tracking padel scores, not training. It’s definitely getting harder to keep track. Back in school, I could remember football plays and moves no problem, but those days are gone! =)

Is it available in AppStore? Curious what made you decide to build it yourself rather than adapt an existing tool?(like me send WhatsApp audio messages to my self and other folks tracking in notion)
