Padel Power!

Just looking for opinions or advice please. I’ve been playing since the beginning of December, I’ve picked up the basics pretty quick and I am currently enjoying playing around with overhead techniques, but i’m still very much a beginner. Im almost middle aged but have always been active through various sports. I find that sometimes I’m absolutely belting it with overheads and also off the back wall but struggle with the desired power output. Is this more likely a technique issue or general strength issue? (I know I am not weak but I am not used to racket sports.) Would it improve with a change of racket? Current racket is a Head Extreme Evo, which I do quite like, but have been looking at a Bullpadel Vertex 04 Jaun Tello as I’d like to try a more advanced racket. I understand that very little of the game is about kick smashes and flat smashes, I’m more focused on returning it off of the glass.

Technique. You don’t need power for padel.

Thanks, yeah you are right about not needing it, but it does give you a lovely Dopamine rush.

It can be fun…but i get more of a rush from out strategy playing. Notice like pushing a gentle ball into the gap you’ve opened up and just watching your opponents face drop in despair.

Yes you do! As an intermediate player, i win all my matches with power shots. If thats your weapon, go for it.

It’s an over compensated to rely on power. It’s a show off shot once your out played your opponent and they made their mistake, positional play is superior.

Point is, power comes from technique, not strength (and certainly not racket). A 13 year olds girl with good technique will generate much more power than you.

Thanks, I will!

It's a technique issue. Some rackets will give you some more free power, but Coello can hit a fast bajada with the cheapest non power racket on the market ;-)

Thought this was the case, thank you.

I used to play with a power racket, but switched to a control racket. And my smash improved because it was substantially more forgiving and easier to execute. Way way too many players will get a power racket, but in my opinion power rackets should be pretty much reserved for intermediate players and above.

Instead of trying to murder the ball play with a more relaxed arm. Before you smash think 'whip it' not 'hit it hard' helped me a lot.

Thanks, I think this is the advice I needed, I’ll try this.

Technique 100% am taking lessons once per week and currently working on my overheads. Coach says it take a ton of repetition to even have decent overheads. So dont rush. My coach can smash it out of the court or back over the net with junior kids racket, and he is pretty skinny. It’s not power , it’s not the racket. And since you play only for few months, your overheads are not supposed to be good so early on.

Great feedback, thanks.

One of the things Most beginners help is Lifting your opposing arm to Face the Ball. This helps lower your playing shoulder and drastically increases power output as well as Improves the angle

Brilliant, thanks for this. Another one to try.

The real power comes from your trunk rotation, not your arm.

I just remind myself to push the ball not hit it
