Can you throw the ball upwards on a serve?

Just looking for some clarification on service rules. Are you allowed to throw the ball upwards before letting it bounce and then contacting for the serve? Or does the ball have to go down from your hand? (dropped/bounced)

as long as the ball is below your waist when you hit it you should be fine but then I don’t see the point of throwing it up

I also don’t see the point on throwing up on court, I usually do it afterwards in the bathroom

Most people that serve backhand do that

The rules say the server must ‘bounce the ball on the ground’. I don’t think that precludes throwing it up and letting it bounce. However you have to hit the ball below your waist so there isn’t much advantage to throwing it.

Not on a drop serve…

You can throw upwards as long as it bounces once in the allowed rectangle behind the service box, at least one of your feet is on the floor also within this imaginary rectangle and you hit the ball below the waistline (approximately belly button height).

Idk where people are getting their info from but on a drop serve the ball must not be thrown in any direction, only dropped (7.d.2). On a volley serve, the ball can be thrown upwards but must be hit before the belly button (7.c.3)

Your waist is your belly button not your hips

The ball could bounce higher than your hip, however you have to it below it makes no sense to bounce it higher
