❔ Question ❔

My whole body hurts

919 commentsu/GiaStom7w ago
I tried padel for the first time 2 days aho and I am utterly shocked how my entire body hurts. My glutes, my arms, wrists, shoulders (really bad), armits (wth).. even my chest area hurts. Im pretty active and go to the gym regularly and I’m never this sore. The pain even woke me up last night. It’s been 2 days Im still feeling it😭. I really fell in love with the sport, and probably have the wrong technique but I absolutely cannot bear this kind of suffering again. What can I do to help?

It probably won't happen this badly again if you play regularly, but just a few basic stretches before and after will help a lot.

1. Warm up, 2. take it easy in initial games (don't smash the ball or run like a maniac) and 3. space your games a few days apart. Your body will get conditioned to it. Padel is a dynamic sport that most people underestimate the impact on the body. It also is the best sport in the world so persist!

Your whole body? How old are you and do you have any other sports experience, previous or current? Your underarms also? Dafuq is going on here?

Hahaha Im not even kidding! Just turned 32. I was never into sports but I go to the gym + pilates. I thought I was fit until these past 2 days 😭. I really don’t know why muscles I didn’t even know existed are hurting now.

I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense given your age and that you exercise. I love Padel, but it's far from a strenuous workout. Try playing again, maybe you just had a rough morning.

Well this doesn’t add up bro.  My suggestion is to play padel for at least two months if you’re playing like 1 or 2 games a week.  And if this persists after that definitely seek medical attention.

I went from once a week to 8 games a week. Was painful at first but feel so much stronger now and healthier. Took about 6 weeks to get through aches and pains and I found collagen powder helped the joints.

Avoid static stretches before, no idea why people are telling you to do these. Do them after if you want. Your muscles are working fibres they aren’t used to. That’s all. You aren’t active in similar ways and probably pushed a bit hard. Warm up properly yes, recover with protein and good sleep, keep at it and you’ll adjust it won’t be as bad as you are more active in it

Stretch before and after around 10-15 mins. Hydrate and rest in between days you play.

Spend atleast 10-15 mins post game doing static and dynamic stretches. Helps tremendously

I didn’t stretch at all last time. It must be why. Never making that mistake again

Ice ice baby. Ice is your best friend. It is not a surprise that a lot of the padel clubs in Asia has free ice bath for players. I am 55 years old and i play every other day. If i can do it, so can you. But you need to start slow. Listen to your body. If it hurts, stop and rest. Do not push through the pain. Despite playing so regularly and after so many years, if i were to stop playing for 2 weeks due to holidays, the pain returns.

There should be a disclaimer once someone signs up. As I was playing, I had no idea my body would react that way a day after. I thought it was mainly cardio.. turns out I was wrong 😭

It’s a rite of passage. You can’t jump into a sport and not suffer through the body adapting to movements you aren’t used to doing. Proper warmup, hydration, equipment (particularly racket and shoes) and recovery are key to minimizing damage and suffering.
