  2. stiff achillis tendon
❔ Question ❔

stiff achillis tendon

238 commentsu/Few-Board-63086w ago
every morning my achillis tendon is stiff for a minute or two, then it dissappear. my fysio says I can't play for 12 weeks. I have 0 pain, just 1 minute of stiffness. anyone here with something similar and still playing padel? I get extremely depressed if I can't play 12 weeks while feeling 'fine'....

So you consulted a professional and his advice was something you didn’t like, so you’d rather listen to a bunch of other padel addicts on the internet? Man this sport is really our drug lol

well, I rather have many 2nd opinions instead of maybe an overly worried fysio who wants to bill me for 12 weeks lol. addiction does weird things to the mind, and stopping cold turkey for 12 weeks isn't going to be pretty so rather have some people with experience here to tell me I should stop lol

Surely you don't need to see the physio every week for three months? They'll give you a program, and you dedicate 30min every day to strengthening your calf / ankle muscles, and maybe some massage and stretching on top of that. Perhaps a check up and a final control, if necessary. The exercises are pretty basic, really, so you could even get away with cutting back your padel volume a bit and incorporating stuff you find on youtube (isometrics, eccentric portion of calf raises...).

Does the tendon hurt when moving? So when running or playing Padel? The 'solution' of not moving for a few weeks is very outdated. For most stuff, light movement is way better than not moving at all. Now, if your achilles tendon start really hurting when playing padel, it might be good to lay if padel for a few weeks, while focussin on specific achicess to recover/strengthen said tendon.

no pain at all, and with 12 weeks my fysio meant a rehab program, not like doing nothing:). scares to try padel now.

Actually it wasn't a padel injury. It is the reason I got into padel. I got injured playing football and when my Dr said *hope you like golf* I couldn't accept it so I transitioned to another sport slowly with less impact.

A rehab program sounds good. Probably best to try some light Padel movement by yourself. Hold your racket, go through your knees and bend through your ankles. Do short sprint, see how youtr tendon feels.

Have something similar. My physio recommended acupuncture if it keeps on going and then massages of the calves. My tension is coming from a tight calf muscle. I don’t wake up every day with the stiffness though. But 2-4 days a week I do. But take care. Recommend seeing a physio specialized in racket sports.

I really recommend acupuncture for this injury. Not dry needling, but a solid, licensed acupuncturist. Did absolute wonders for my chronic achilles injury in twee sessions

I also have this and am still recovering. At first it was in one foot and I thought it was because I had to get used to playing more but then I also got it in the other foot. I walked it off during the morning and when playing it wasn’t preventing me from doing anything. When after a couple of months it was still there I decided to go to a fysio and he also advised to stop playing for a while and first recover from it because it could become chronic. While I like padel I also like walking normal out of the bed without feeling my achilles. So I stopped for 3 months. I’m now doing al kinds of exercises to strengthen all the muscles around my foot/ankle/calf and slowly increasing the strain and am playing again.

Strengthen your hips.. strengthen your calves.. strengthen your achilles. It's usually not the Achilles alone

yes was working on that true atg programs. can do atg split squat with flat feet on ground and couchstretches without any issues. calves and hamstrings need some work for sure. actually injured myself during explosive calfraises..

Struggle with the same issue and have done for years, I’ve seen various physios and tried loads of prehab but never really shook it. Ultimately, I’ve decided it doesn’t affect me after I’ve moved around a bit and it’s not getting any worse so I’m living with it. I must caveat this with I have no medical qualifications!

yeah I'm too afraid it becomes chronic, not even halfway my life so better be cautious with my tendons lol

I have a ankle and tibia/peroné surgery. A few screws and metal plaque. I have a stiff leg and I have to do ankle excesixes daily. For the tendon, I've been told that if there's no pain, inflammation or soreness after. During or before playing there's no issue. But should stop if happens. What I do is some mobility in the mornings and and then a 5/10m walk. With that it goes away.

I had the same thing PT did dry needling and gave me some excercises it helped a lot. Still playing. She also told me to do light stretches before getting out of bed.

so you never stopped playing and the pain disappeared?

It improved significantly and basically gone if I ever remember to stretch before getting out of bed. Before playing, she told me to do calf raises (similar to this but single leg). But the dry needle immediately helped. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kthnyjqlqdo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kthnyjqlqdo)

I have heel pain every now and then, usually as a result of not stretching properly before or after playing, I find that if my calf is tight this can cause heel/ankle pain, so strip your calf or rather ask a masseuse to do this and stretch after and warm up before playing if you can 👍

yeah I think it's not a tight calf but more my tendons. will see the therapist next Tuesday...

I have had Achilles issues for years, recently had shock wave therapy and potentially may have surgery. I still play padel 4 times a week, sometimes more. Coming from football and tennis, I can tell you that padel is a hell of a lot more forgiving on your Achilles.

so maybe surgery but still playing, no rehab yet? damn I'm way too scared for that lol. good luck with the surgery..

I have had physio multiple times over the years and it hasn’t got rid of the issues. I had a foot operation on Friday, which is forcing me to not do anything for a few weeks. So the plan is to reduce the amount I play (3 times a week), when I return, and see if that helps. I have never truly rested it before.

I had this and kept playing. Wasn't great. I went to an acupuncturist and he fixed the achilles injury in no time. He said I could play during treatment (was only two sessions), just no more than twice a week.

and ultimately the pain disappeared completely?

Yes! I had chronic pain for at least a year. Went to different physicians, but nothing really helped. Tried insoles, special socks etc. In the end, en could of sessions with an experienced acupuncturist did the trick for me. It has been over a year since I went and never had any pain since. I honestly was pretty surprised it worked 😂
