Fake smash - do you rulo or hit the open space softly? (Video)

This is theoretical and I don’t work on it at all, as I probably get to do very few times in game. I’m not at the level where I can smash everything but it’s nice to be ready when it comes. Slowly working up to a level where opponents will respect the smash and try to run forwards to pick it up. So to switch it up I tried to fake smash, but it wasn’t great. Should I be using a rulo this to the fence or aim for that open corner behind the runner? What I ended up doing was hitting in the middle and it bounced way too high. Luckily the opponent gave me an easy ball to volley back

In this partnership, why on earth are you playing on the right?

I switched to left last game, which we won (but level was weaker). Playing left today as well. I usually play right and partner preferred left, but it wasn’t working well so we’ve switched now.

If you are playing with the same guy you simply have to play left. You are over covering his side, and are massively out of position on a lot of points. Any player, who can place the ball where they want it, will punish you being that far out of position.

Subpar rulo @ 1:18

The way your body was set up you definitely didn’t mean to hit that shot there, sorry. A rulo is almost always played cross court from above your weak shoulder (a right handed player from left court would hit it or a lefty from right court). You wouldn’t ever be playing a rulo parallel (extremely small margin of error). You could hit a gancho or angle a bandeja into your parallel cage though, but I’d focus more on consistency of hitting the ball where you mean to hit it than on more technical shots like a rulo, for now.

I don’t remember what I was going for there but I’ve definitely at that same gancho before. At 0:13. What shot should I have gone for?

The only reason I’m trying to switch up is because I want to break the habit of just getting the ball back. Right now it’s limited to hit it left or hit it right. I want to actually think about where i’m aiming it (i.e to the fence, to the service line, etc.). Let’s not call it a rulo, just a normal volley when players are out of position like at 0:13.
