For background, in my highest competition games I usually play on the right. I only recently leveled up to a mid-intermediate category. I'm older so while still quick, I'm a step slower than I was in my 30s and that is one thing that affects the side I play in these very fast games.
Now that said, there are fewer players at my mid-intermediate level than my previous level, so most of the games I play are with a partner up to 0.5 level lower than me.
I (and others) have asked the question about when you play both sides what you do in this case and I often play left in these games and do pretty well at it. But not always.
Two things come up though. When I play right, I often have better finishing skills than my lower level partner does even if I stay on the right. Secondly, I think in my top competition game I may not be able to hang with the extra court coverage down the middle at the faster speeds.
I have not seriously pursued playing on the left in my top competition games and I am sure I will soon, but as the title says, Is this something you can/do/should talk about with your coach along with when talking about other tactics? I have no regular partner but I circulate in 3 different groups so 90% of the time I am playing with or against someone I know.
As I write this the answer seems obvious, yet pro class time is expensive and I want to work on things I know he will help me improve upon cause he's a great coach.
