Stiff achilles after padel

My wife and I have been lucky to have padel included on an all inclusive 2 week holiday in Mexico. We’ve played padel 6 of 9 days so far. We’re brand new to it. Before now we’ve played once a week for around 4 weeks and that’s it. Racket sports before this were badminton maybe once every couple of months and tennis maybe once a fortnight in the summer. I’ve got tightness in my achilles afterwards each day. Any recommendations around this? I’m 35 if that means anything. I have increased stretching with some calf raises on a kerb to stretch the area but I’ll take any other recommendations and advice. Really don’t want a serious achilles injury. Used to play a lot of football and basketball back in the day and never had this issue. Unsure if I’m just getting old or it’s common from racket sports. I only have light asics running trainers on the holiday due to luggage allowance so if padel footwear is the answer I’m also open to recommendations for a beginner.

It's pretty normal in the sense that you played so much and your body doesn't have time to recover.

Obvs do the stretches etc, but personally I find achillies soreness to warn me my shoes are no good. New shoes... No pain. (Repeat this everyone 6 months or so...)

Thanks! I’m definitely wearing the wrong trainers on holiday I just didn’t expect it to impact so quickly.

I had achilles issues and did calve stretches. While that did help I still had issues from time to time until my physio pointed out that there’s also a calf stretch that you can do with a bent leg that focuses on a different part. Combing the stretches and doing them daily got rid of my achilles issues for me.

Get get yourself a pair of asics gel revolution, if you feel unsure about it maybe give yourself a little break

Cant recommend kinesiology tape enough for this, really helped me out

The shoes, always the shoes. Make sure you take a pair with a high lip behind

Yeah I agree, I changed shoes fairly soon after buying my first pair due to heel pain (no further issues since)

I had the same issue, warm compress before I play and cold compress after helps. I also wore ankle support which I got from amazon

I have very flat feet and over pronated ankles. While it usually manifests in ankle soreness after long sessions (and a tendency to roll my ankle, though it usually doesn’t result in lasting injury), I bought the med spec iso ankle stabilizers and play with those. All foot soreness has disappeared. I can’t speak specifically for Achilles though. I’ve also heard great things about the hyperice boot, specifically for Achilles, but can’t vouch personally

That's more than enough padel for someone who's not used to it. I get you're having fun but I'd stop before you injure yourself. Go do something else.

Interested in going away in May but haven’t came across any hotels in Mexico with padel courts. Can you share name of hotel?

Sure. We’ve stayed in 2. 1 week each. Grand Palladium in Riviera Maya (we stayed in TRS Yucatan). It has two padel courts. The courts and rackets were included but the court surface condition was poor with gaps in the turf. And it’s old style concrete instead of glass. Now we’re in Grand Palladium in Costa Murjeres which has the Rafa Nadal tennis centre. Courts included but 200 mxn for racket hire per hour. Great condition courts. Modern glass and fairly new and all Babolat kit.
